    IgrewupinMontreandstudiedphysicsatMcGillUy.Inthesummerof1981,asIwasfinishingmyundergraduatedegree,IattendedameetingofthePugwashferenSdWorldAffairsinBanff,Alberta,whereIheardaspeechaboutthecrucialenergyandenviroalchallengesarisingoutoftheincreasingplexityandfullness-ofpeopleandideasandthings-oftheworld.Idecidedtoshiftmystudiesfromphysicaltosocialsces,aontodoagraduatedegreeineidpublicpolicyattheUyofCaliforniaatBerkeley.Aftergraduation,IworkedatavarietyofresearstitutionsinNorthAmerica,Europe,andAsia,ahecorporatepnnimentofPacificGasaripanyinSanFrancisco.

    Myfatherhadtaughtmethevalueofindustriousness-ofdoingmyjobwell,whateverthatjobwas-andofself-determinationandself-improvement.HisfavoritestorywasofHenryDavidThoreau,whohadlivedinthewoodsatWaldenPondandaftertwoyearshadeoutwithhisaxesharperthanwhenhehadgonein.

    Iwasyoungandambitiousaomakemymarkontheworld.

    GEIVEPOWER

    In1988,whenIwastwenty-sevenyearsold,ImovedfromSanFranciscotoLondontotakeajobintheglobalstrategydepartmentoftheenergypanyRoyalDutchShell.WhatIlovedmostaboutwforShellwasthepower.Ietingthediplomaticmemos:"ThegoverofC?ted'IvoirehasreiteratedtheirrequestthatwedesistfromreferringtothemastheIvoryCoast."Ioamistakenphonecalskingmewherea300millionpaymentforafueloildeliveryshouldbedeposited.IlikedShell'spracticalroleinprovidingtheworldwithenergy:thepanyiedhundredsofmillionsofdolrsayearinresearddevelopment,drilledforoilthousandsoffeetuer,andproducedfuelsbyheatingoilsandsandcoolingnaturalgas.Ireveledinbeingasmallthisbigandimportantmae.

    IwasatShelttheheightofcapitalistfideheBerlinWallhadjustfalleerboomwasstarting,FrancisFukuyamahadpublished"TheEndofHistory,"TomWolfewaswritingaboutManhattanfinanciersas"MastersoftheUniverse,"andMargaretThatcherronoungthat"ThereIsNoAlternative"totheAnglo-Amerifreeenterprisemodel.Thedominantculturalmemewasthatinallspheres-eic,political,social,legal,iional,intellectual-atestamongpetingpowersproducedthebestoute.[11]FrommyoffiaLondonskyscraper,itseemedtomethatifeverybodyjustdidtheirjobandpushedforwardtheirpart-engagedincivilized,manlyjostling-thewholewouldgrorosper.

    MyexperieShell,andelsewhereintheworldofbusiness,wasofanalmostsingle-mindedemphasisonthepragmaticuseofpower-thekindofpowerthataformerphysicsstudentcseemedtomethatbusinesspeopleuoodpowerthesamewayMartinLutherKingJr.did:"Powerproperlyuoodisnothingbuttheabilitytoachievepurpose."[12]TheirasseemedtoaccordwithPaulTillich'sexpnationofpeiveroot:"thedriveofeverythinglivingtorealizeitself,withincreasingiyaensity."Thisdrivebeseenintheforceofagrowiheforcethat"guerrilgardeners"employtoturnvaturbanlotsintoparks,whentheysurreptitiouslyphatbreakthroughthecrete.

    AtShellIcouldseehowmyowndriveforself-realization,alongwiththatofmycolleagues,producedfuriouslypetitiveintellectualcreativityandgrowth.Theheadofourdepartment,AriedeGeus,wroteabookcalledTheLivingpany.Thishelpedmealsoseehowthepany'slivingdriveforself-realization,alongwiththatofotherpanies,producedfuriouslypetitiveercialcreativityandgrowth.[13]

    InallofthisIsawthegeiveaspectofpower:theuniversaldriveto"getone'sjobdone."Powerexpressesourpurposefulness,wholeness,andagency.Althoughpoweristhedrivetorealizeone'sself,theeffectofpoesbeyondone'sself.Powerishowwemakeadiffereheworld;itisthemeansbywhiewsocialrealitiesarecreated.Withoutpower,nothingnewgrows.

    AtShellIwasheadofthestrategygroupthatstructedsarios-pusiblealternativestories-ofsocial-political-enviroaltextsinwhichthepanymightfinditself.In1991,PieterleRoux,aprofessorattheleft-wingUyoftheWesternCapeinSouthAfrica,tactedmebecausehewaousetheShellmethodologytohelpagroupofSouthAfrioppositionleadersdevelopastrategyforeffegthetransitionawayfromapartheid.NelsonMandehadjustbeenreleasedfromtwenty-sevenyearsinprison,andtheiatioweentheoppositionaeminoverhadstartedinear.LeRoux'sprojectsouerestingandworthwhiletome,andmyShellbosseswerehappy,afteryearsofbeingvilifiedfornothavingdivestedfromSouthAfrica,fortheopportunitytorebuildthepany'sretionshipswiththeopposition.Soiember1991,ItraveledtoCapeTowntofacilitatethefirstworkshopofwhatbecameknownastheMontFleurSarioExercise.[14]

    WhatIfoundexhiratingiingtheseleaders-frompoliticalparties,tradeunions,unityanizations,uies,andpanies-wastheirpowerfulpurposefulness.Everyohemwasittedtoaddressing,fromtheirparticuridologidinstitutionalbase,SouthAfrica'stoughchallenges,andtheyhadalreadyrealizedthattheycouldbesuccessfulonlyiftheyworkedtogether.WhitebusinessmanJohannLiebeerremembered,withsurpriseandpleasure,hisversationswiththebckleaderswhohadhithertobeenhisadversaries:"Thiswasome,especiallyhowopen-miheywere.Thesewerenotpeoplewhosimplysaid:'Look,thisishowitisgoingtobewheakeoveroneday.'Theywerepreparedtosay:'Hey,howwoulditbe?Let'sdiscussit.'"[15]Ifeltexcitedtopyapartinthisimportantsocialgeprocess.

    WhatIsawintheseworkshops,andthroughthewindowtheyprovidedmeontothedynamicsofSouthAfrica'sextraordinarytransition,gedmyuandingofwhatossibleintheworld.Isawthatateamofleadersfromacrossasocialsystemcould,eveniplex,flictual,andchallengingoftexts,exercisetheirpowercollectivelytogethatsystemforthebetter.IwasinspiredbywhatIwaslearningaboutthisgeivepower.

    WhatIsawalsogedmyuandingofwhatossibleforme.IsawthatIhadajobtodo-awayofmakingadiffereheworld-insuppsuchteams.In1993,IresignedfromShelndmovedtoSouthAfrica.SihenIhavebeendoingthiskindofworkthereandelsewhere.

    DEGEIVEPOWER

    Howdoweetonotiethingthatwearenotnotig?Iwasoncewinmyoffidmysungsseswereinmyshirtpocket.Iwentintoadarkclosetandleanedovertopickupsomesupplieshefloor,whenIheardasoundthatIcouldn'tpce.AsIwentout,Iunsciouslyfiledawaythatanomalousevent-theunexpinedsound-abacktowhatIwasdoing.LaterIsawthatIhadmispcedmysungssesandbeganlookingalroundforthem.ThenIrememberedtheunexpinedsoundandrealizedithadbeenthesoundofmysungssesfallingoutofmypocketontotheclosetfloor.

    DuringthefirstyearsafterIleftShelndstartedwasafacilitatorofsocialgeteams,IkepthearingsoundsofasedkindofpowerthatIdidn'tknowhowtointerpret.MyfirstinterpretationofwhathadhappeMoheinterpretationthatIwaswfrom-wasthattheteamhaddecidedthattheirpower,theirdrivetorealizethemselvesasindividualsandasanation,oreeffectivelybeexercisedwwithratherthanagainstoher.Theyhadusedfourbirdimagestosummarizetheirshareduandingofthedifferentwaysthefutureofthenationmightunfold:an"Ostrich"sarioofwhitedenial,a"LameDuck"sarioofanoverstrainednewbckgover,an"Icarus"sarioofthenewgoverflyingtoohightoofast,anda"Fmingos"sarioofrisingslowlytogether.ButwhenPalloJordaheintellectualleadersoftheAfriationalgress,heardthesesariospreseapartymeetihoughttheywereridiculouslyna?veabouttheessentiallyviolentdynamicsofpowerihAfritext."Whatisallthisaboutdudfmingos?"heaskedincredulously."Theonlybirdsthatmatterherearehaarrows!"

    ItisnotsurprisingthatJordanandIhaddifferentperspectivesonpower.Icamefromapeadueredbackground,andIhadenteredSouthAfricaforthefirsttimein1991,oneyearafterthehopefultransitioiationshadstartedandseveralyearsafterthehopeless,violentcshesbetweenthegoverandtheoppositioninthe1970sand1980s.Jordanisbck,whiapartheidSouthAfricameanshegrewupasased-cssperson.HehadspentdecadesinexilewfortheAfriationalgressandhadonlyjustreturhetrytoengagedirectlyioughiations.Powerlooksdifferenttopeoplewhohavetleforit.

    NowIrealizedwhatIhadbeenhearing:powerhastwosides.Thegeivesideofpoweristhepower-tothatPaulTillichreferstoasthedrivetoself-realization.Thedegeive,shadowsideispower-over-thestealingorsuppressionoftheself-realizationofaillichreizesbothsides:"Poweractualizesitselfthroughfordpulsion.Butpowerishertheoheother.Itisbeing,actualizingitselfovernon-being.Itusesandabusespulsioniooverethisthreat.Itusesandabusesforordertoactualizeitself.Butitishertheoheother."[16]Power-overabusesfordpulsiontosuppressoroppressordomiher.

    LikePalloJordan,mywifeDorothyisbdgrewupinSouthAfridwasinvolvedforyearsii-apartheidstruggle.WhenterwevisitedGuatematogether,shenotiethingthatIdidn't.ThepositionofabinalpeoplethereremindedherofbSouthAfrica:theyweretreatedasiftheywereinvisible.Nottoseeanotherperson,ortoseeherorhimasanonperson,istheextrememaionofpower-over.

    Themostoandingofpowerisaspower-over.WhenStephenLukes,aprofessorofpolitidsociologyatNewYorkUy,wrotehiscssic1974bookPower:ARadicalView,heequatedpowerwithdomination.Butthirtyyearster,inthesededition,Lukesrevisedhisview:"Itwasamistaketodefinepowerbysayingthat'AexercisespoweroverBwhenAaffectsBinamannertrarytoB'sis.'Powerasdominationisonlyonespeciesofpower."[17]Power-overisasubsetofpower-to.

    Degeivepower-overarisesoutofgeivepower-to.WhenIamexergmypower-toandIfeelmyselfbumpingupagainstyouexergyours,andifinthisflictIhavethecapacitytoprevailoveryou,thenIeasilyturntoexergpoweroveryou.Mydrivetorealizemyselfslipseasilyintovaluingmyself-realizationaboveyours,aobelievingarrogantlythatIammoredeservingofself-realization,aoadvangmyself-realizationevenifitimpedesyours.

    ManywhitesinSouthAfricavaluedtheirself-realizationabovethatofothers,andtheydeployedanideology-apart-heid-tojustifytheirbehavior.Weseeanalogousdynamicsacrossracesorethnicgroupsorcssesendersineverysociety.Thus,theseductivelybeautifulfaceofpower-tomorphs,asinahorrormovie,intotheviciouslyterriblefaceofpower-over.

    OnceIhadseewosidesofpowerstarklyinSouthAfrica,Ichemmoreeasilyelsewhere.AfterIleftShell,IsultedtoseveralpaniesandbusinessassociationsinHouston,Texas.IfoundthebusinesscultureofHoustonunusuandfasating.Thebusinesspeopletherewereunstraiheirenthusiasmforindepe,ued,entrepreneurialpower-to.The-dopropertydevelopersImetownedprivatepahnameslike"JohnSmithIs,"whiderstoodtorepresentanunabashedcelebrationoftheadvangofanindividual'sowsandpower.

    Thesesamebusinesspeoplewerealsoenthusiastitheirsupportforvoluntaryphinthropyandcivigagement.TheyweremoreawarethanpeopleIhadmetelsewhereoftheirroleintheevolutionoftheirsocialreality.Houstonhadgrownfrombeiwenty-firstrgestcityiedStatesin1940testin1990.Ithadbeewhatitwasnotbyact,butastheresultoftheiionaldeadebypeoplesuchasthemselves,andtheyfeltaresponsibilitytotihispublicwork.TheideologyofHoustonbusinesspeoplepromotedindividualself-realizationinaligwithcollectiveself-realization.

    Inthisunity,theveryepitomeofpower-towasKenLay,thefounderandchairmanofEnron,the100billionnaturalgas,electricity,andteleunicationspany.Enronhadbeennamed"America'sMostInnovativepany"byFortunemagazinesixyearsinarow,andLaywasadmiredasarepreneurialgenius.AtShell,youngstaffwhosideredthemselvestobesophisticatedstrategistswereinaweofEnron'sdealmaking.ThepanywasoneofHouston'sbiggestemployersandcharitabledonors,andithadsponsoredapopurnenstadium.WhenLayvisitedourHoustonworkshops,theotherbusinessleaderstreatedhimlikeagod.Laysymbolizedthevirtuesofthefreemarketeerwhoseueredpower-toproducedbothprivatewealthandpublicgood.

    In2001,IchairedaBusinessLeaders'DialogueattheAspenInstituteinColorado.Amoits,whoincludediionalcorporate,goverradeunion,andnonprofitleaders,Laywasthestarwhomeveryoedtomeet.Bythistime,storiesaboutEnron'smalfeasancewerebeginningtocircute.ThemostpromiaccusationagainstEnronwasthatithadillegallymaniputedCalifornia'selectricitymarket,andCaliforniaatteneralBillLockyerwascallingforLaytobeprosecuted.

    Lay'sarticipatinginourmeetingwasstriking.Hemovedinandoutofthesessions,whichwehadalgreednottodoandwhiooneelsedid.Heseemedtoholdhimselfapartfromorabovethegroup.Hewastheonlydissenterfromthegroup'sclusionthatcorporatesocialresponsibilityshouldbeenforcedratherthavoluntary.Theonlytimeheparticipatedpassionatelywaswhen,withrighteousindignatiooldthestoryaboutLockyerhavingthreatenedhimbysaying,"IwouldlovetopersonallyescortLaytoan8-by-10cellthathecouldsharewithatattooeddudewhosays,'Hi,mynameisSpike,honey.'"[18]

    Duringthesesessions,onlyoherpartit,atradeunionist,everchallengedLay.Everyoneelsespicuouslydeferredtohim.IthoughtthatifLayowerfuhy,hedeservedtobelookedupto,andalsothatifIolitetohim,Imightbefromhisrgesse.

    OneyearaftertheAspenInstitutemeeting,EnrondecredbankruptdfiveyearsAfter,Laywasfoundguiltyoftenchargesoffraudandspiracy.Thepany'scolpsewipedoutmorethan60billioninshareholderimentand6,000employeejobs,ahedissolutionofArthurAndersen,itsauditor.

    Exergcreative,entrepreneurial,profitablepower-toisnothardifyoupretend,andareallowedtopretend,thatyouliveinaedterranullius.ButLayandhisEnroncolleaguesdidnotliveinsuemptyworld,andindefraudingmillionsofpeople,theyseverelyundermihosepeople'spower-to.Lay'semphaticrejeofrulesthatgovernthecollective,asmaedinhisdisi(enabledbyourdeferehesmallmatterofourmeeting'sgroundrulesandthergermatterofU.S.w,illustratedhisdisected,degeivepower-over.

    Theirresponsiblepower-overexercisedbyEnroivesforeshadowedtheglobalfinancialcolpseof2008.BusinessjournalistMarkHaineswasflummoxedwhenthecrisisbroke:"Weassumethattheindividualpursuinghisorherowiwillresultinthemaximumbeforsocietyasawhole-andthatcertainlyhastobequestionednow."[19]TheuandingthatIhadimbibedinLondoyyearsearlier-thatasystemdrivenbythepower-toofthepartswouldproduceabeneficialresultforthewhole-wastragicallyinpleteandie.Beforethisbecameapparent,however,Iwastohaveotherexperiehatledmetomycurrentuandingofdegeivepower.

    When,afterMontFleur,Ihadstartedwondifferenttoughchallengesindifferenttries-power-overmaingiyandinequality-IcarriedwithmeacertainfideIcamefromatry,ada,thathadsuccessfullyovereitsownsuchchallenges.Soin2003IwastakenabacktofindmyselfinaferenattheDepartmentofJustiOttawa,Ontario,listeningtoagroupofleadersofgover,business,andabinal(NativeorFirstNations)anizationstalkabouttheirenterswiththerealitiesofabinalpeopleinada.

    Aswewentarouableandheardeachperson'sstory-ofextraordinarilyhighlevelsofpoverty,addi,andsuicide;decadesofabuseby"well-iioned"goversandchurches;flictsovertheextraofoindothernaturalresources;thousandsofstudaydisputes-itbecameobvioustomethatIdidnotefromatrythathadsuccessfullyoveresuchchallenges.MycolleagueUrsuVersteegensaysthatourmostimportantlearningsenotsimplywheheworldanew,butspecificallywhenweseeourselves-andourroleiingtheworld-anew.[20]OnthatdayIsawthatIartofasocietythatwasexergaterriblepower-over.

    Oneaspectofthisadiansituationwasthewidelyheldmentalmodelthatabinalpeopleo"bedeveloped."Thismodelhadbeeninstitutionalizedin,amongotherpractices,apolicyofaggressiveassimitionthatsihe1850shadtakenchildrenawayfromtheirparentstobeeducatedinchurdstate-runresidentialschools.OhefoundersofresidentialschoolinginNorthAmericacharacterizedhisapproachas"killtheIndianandsavetheman."[21]Residentialschooliedalegacyofphysical,emotional,sexual,andculturabuse.Bythetimethestresidentialschoolinadaclosedin1998,thispoweroverabinalpeoplehadbeenreplicatedfeions.

    AfterthismeetinginOttawa,Iandafewcolleaguesbeganwwithateamofnationalgoverandabinalleaderstotryoutanewwaytounstickthisstucksituation.Wechoseasourentrypoiraordinarilyhighrateofsuicideamongabinalyouth:fivetimestheadianaverage.Butafterfouryearsofon-and-offefforts,wehadhardlymovedforwardatall.Wekeptrunningintoroadblocks,rgeandsmall.Atonepointwewerefrustratedintryingtounicatewiththestaffofanabinal-runfereer.Ipinedaboutthistomyfriend,activistMichelGelobter,andhechidedme:"Whyareyousurprisedthatoppressedunitiesexhibitseriousdys-funs?Thesedysfunshavetnizedawith;theyrerdmaintainoppressionbydiminishingthecapacityoftheseuoheal."Thedegeiveimpactsofpower-overareresolutelypersistent.

    Ialsonoticedthatwithinourmiicprojectteam,wesucceededinre-creatiuckretionshipsthatcharacterizedthemaweweretryingtoge.Thegoverleaderswaoremainintrondto"fix"theabinalproblem.Theabinalleadersdidn'twanttobetrolledorfixedordevelopedbyanyone.Andthoseofuswhoweresultantsdispassionatelykeptourselvesapartfromandabovethesituation.Weallhadourowndifferentrolesandpowersandtrajectoriesofself-realization,whieverreallymovedandneverreallymet.Sowemadenressonthechallewehadsetouttoaddress.(Onlyter,whentheserolesandpowerretionswereforcefullyrestructuredandownershipoftheprojectwastakenoverbyalocabinalunity,didtheinitiativebegintomoveforward.)

    Inada,asinSouthAfridHouston,Ihadbeehesoundofpower-tomoreeasilythanthesoundofpower-overbecausetheformerresonatedmorestronglywithmyownprivilegedexperiehenin2004Igotatasteoftheexperieheundersideofpower-over.MyLondonpartnerZaidHassanandIwereiofacilitateaworkshopinMichiganfroupofU.S.minorityactivistswhowererethinkirategyforachievingracialequityinlightofthejust-issuedSupremeCourtdecisionthatsharplylimitedaffirmativea.

    Iwasuledevenbeforethemeetingstarted.ZaidisMuslimandIamJewish,andonthepneridehehadshownmeanartianactivistmagazipoihowmanyoftheU.S.neoservativesareJewish.Healsoshowedmealettertotheeditorthathehadwritten,inwhichheaowledgedhowtentiousthisassertionwasbutdefeasrmativeandfair.Westartedintoatensediscussion,afractalofthergerMuslim-Jewishflict,butthencutshortumenttogetreadyfortheworkshop.

    WiththisunresolvedtensioweenZaidaheworkshopstartedawkwardlyandgotworse.ThepartitswerefeeliendownbytheregressionincivilrightsiedStatesanddiscedaboutthepoorresultstheirexistingstrategieswereprodug.Theydidn'tthinkmyleadershipofthemeeting,withmywhiteandfncolleagues,waslegitimate,andtheywereunhappywiththeprocesswewereusing.Harshpowerstrugglesswirledaroundandwithintheroom.EventuallyitbecameobviousthatIwasn'twaheworkshopatall,andso,feelinghumiliated,Igaveup.Ileftthegrouptoleaditselfabayroom.

    ThatnightIhadaterrifyingdream.Agangwasharassingmemercilessly-crowdingandshovingandhittingme-andIcouldn'tescape.EventuallyIbecamesohopelessanddespairingthatIpulledthepinoutofahandgrenadeandblewmyselfupwithallofthem:Ibecameasuicidebomber.ThroughthisdreamIexperieheterrible,debilitatingfeelingofbeingonthereceivingendofpower-over.

    By2008,myuandingofthedynamicsofpowerandlovewastakingshapethroughsuchexperiendrefles.ThenIhadanotherenterwithabinalissues,thistimeinAustralia.IwasioMelbournebyanAustralianabinalleaderrickDodson.Heiswellknownforhisdecadesofvariedstruggles-mobilizatioiations,invocations,wsuits-toaddressthechallengesfacedbyhispeople,andspecificallyforhiseffortstoachievereciliatioweenabinandnonab-inalAustralians.[22]Heknowshowharditistomoveforwardonthesechallengesandwasn'tsurprisedbytheckressoftheeffortinadainwhichIhadbeeninvolved.

    DodsonwaotributetoameetingthathewasveningwithJohnSanderson,theformerchiefoftheAustralianArmy.Theyweretryingtostruewsetofagreements(includingstitutionames)thatwould,morethan220yearsafterthearrivalofthesettlersand15yearsaftertheHighCourtverdictthatoverruledterranullius,puttheretionshipbetweewopeoplesonanequalfooting.

    Theeveningbeforeourmeetiostart,Iwalkedbyanoutdooremaandfoundmyselfwatgtwodotaries.ThefirstwasTheWhiteP,afilmaboutarcticwildlifeandthedafacesfromglobalwarming.[23]ThesedwasKanyini,aboutanAustralianabinalleadernamedBobRandall,amemberofthe"Stoleion"whoasachildhad(likemanyadianchildreakenawayfromhisfamilybythegover.[24]InKanyini,Randalrguesthatthecrisisinabinalsocietyiheirhavingbeendispossessedarangedfromthefouraspectsoflifethatareessentialtosurvival:theirbeliefsystemorw,theirndortry,theirspirituality,andtheirfamilies."Thepurposeoflifeistobepartofeverythingthatis,"hesaysinthefilm."Youtakeawaymykanyini,myintereess,andI'mnothing.I'mdead."IwasstruckthatRandall'syearningwasthesameasPaulTillich'slove:"thedrivetowardstheunityoftheseparated."

    Iapositionofthesetwofilms,Icouldnowseepenswhenweemployourpowerwithoutlove.Ourdestruofabinalsocietiesworldwideandourheadlongrushtowardsthedestruoftheecosystemsonwhichalloursocietiesdependarisefromourdisefromoherandfromtheearth.EnviroalistJuliaButterflyHillmadethesamepointindescribingherunlikelypartnershipwithsociactivistVanJones:"Ibroughtthepiecethatwearenotseparatefromthep.Hispiecewasthatweouplifteveryone.Wewereittedtoseeinghowthosepiecesfittogether.Wecouldseeunderhallofitwastheideaofdisposability:theideathatyou'vegotdisposablepeople,adisposablep."[25]Ifwepushawayorabandonoursenseofewithothers-ouraowledgment,oursensitivity,ourlove-thereisnolimittothesaderror,andpainthatouruncheckedporoduce.
